The limit that bites is the one on the server
Twenty compressions per session, 5 MB per image. Neither number exists because PNG is hard; both exist because someone else's CPU and bandwidth are finite. On this page the ceiling is your machine's memory — 40 megapixels per image, or 30 across all frames of an animation — which means a 6 MB screenshot from a 4K display is not a special case and a folder of two hundred assets is a single drop.
Nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits on an uplink. A 3.8 MB photo finishes in about six seconds on a laptop — all of it spent searching palettes, none of it waiting on a network — and the result is byte-identical to what the command line tool writes.
How the output compares
At the same measured quality the median image comes out 8–12% smaller than TinyPNG's PNG and 12–14% smaller than its JPEG. Both tools do the same kind of thing — reduce to a palette, then re-encode — but this one searches palette sizes from 2 to 256, with and without dithering, scores every candidate with SSIMULACRA2, and keeps the smallest file that still clears the target. In the 180-image benchmark behind this site, that search averages +1.7 points against TinyPNG and reaches the target on 67 of the 71 held-out images.
When TinyPNG is the better tool
AVIF output, an API with resize and crop, a WordPress plugin that chews through a whole media library, a CDN in front of your assets. Their product is built for pipelines and servers, and if that is your job then it is aimed at you. A file over 40 megapixels is also beyond this page — a 20000-pixel-wide stitched scan belongs in a server-side tool. Everything smaller, compressed once or watched as it happens, does not need a round trip.
